"ADRENALIN HIGH" by Bette Wolf Duncan........

Bull Riding: The Most Dangerous Eight Seconds in Sports
Broken bones, joint sprains, concussions, back and neck injuries and death are facts of life in bull riding.

ADRENALIN HIGH

Ma calls me her "rodeo wreckage",
with a bull-battered,  senseless ol' brain;
and a body of bull-shattered, broken-up bones
still throbbing from bull riding pain
"Chasin' rodeo rainbows", she'd say.
"And for what? Some buckle made out of fools gold?
Get a job in the sawmill, like Pa. Settle down!
Find a nice girl and marry!"
, she'd scold.
Then near every day I'd hear my Ma say:
"Luck peters out, and rainbows soon end;
and I 'm scared that one day you'll be slain
Oh, there's no pot a gold t' be found round the bend..
just a pot full a pennies 'n pain."

Well, Ma's got her own way a thinkin';
and she looks at things different from me.
Now this rodeo man's headed straight for Cheyenne,
Seems as how Ma 'n me don't agree.
Ma calls me a fool of a dreamer:
and I reckon that maybe I am.
But I'm ridin' that rainbow and chasin'my dream
all the way from here to Cheyenne.
"Cuz pursuin' a dream, that's important..
as is, knowin' y' gave it your  best.
And it's not the gold that's the magnet.
What' drawin' me on is the quest!
It's the heat of the race,
   the competitive drive,
        the thrill of the chase,
               and the feelin' alive!
It's exciting! A rush!
    An adrenalin high!
          And I'm hooked!
               I'm hooked!
I'm hooked like a sky diver's hooked on the sky!
And I know when I mount up,  I should say good-bye
cuz when that chute opens, I damn well might die!!!
Adrenalin High!

It's Here! ....."Cowboy Western Poetry- RODEO COUNTRY" by Bette Wolf Duncan

Cover of "Rodeo Country"

       The author, Bette Wolf Duncan, grew up in southeastern Montana, not far from the Wyoming border. This is Rodeo Country; and she celebrates this rich western heritage with poems and photos of regional rodeo champions.  She is the granddaughter of early Montana and North Dakota pioneers; and she was married to a former cowboy whose grandparents were among the earliest ranchers in southeast Montana. She can still hear with her heart the pioneers tales of relatives and other old-timers. This book is the echo of their tales and of good times remembered. It contains a collection of poetry and written accounts that embody much of the history and events that shaped Montana and Wyoming.
