OL # 92

by Rusty Feathers
Now ‘ol 92 was no ordinary steer but a steer that was bold and divine
Slender and sleek fast on his feet the cowboys he out ran numbered 29

OL’ Daren Beede is one good hand and stands about six foot five
A lean mean bulldoggin machine weights 230 lbs wet or dry
Daren climbed down in the chute grabbed his horns not making a sound
climbed down in the back of the chute with plans to tail ‘ol 92 down
The clamber of a dislodged pin the squeak of the swinging gate
Muscles tense adrenalin runs not knowing out come or fate
At the end of a 300-foot arena we let the black steer go
We got in a lot of sliding but the steer we didn’t throw
Mounted riders take it from here down the return alley he did run
It’s time to get down and dirty it’s become work and no longer fun
Now it’s my turn to throw the steer so I climb down by his head
And when the shoot opens wide this cowboy the steer will dread
The shoot gate swings open and I make the fateful catch
For this little black steer and me there seems to be no match
Again we did a lot of sliddin at the end of the pen we are found
It’s hard to believe there’s such a steer no man can throw to the ground
To town for drinkin and dancing the cuts and bruises soon heal
A little help from a bottle of whiskey you talk of a steer that’s unreal
Up in Idaho to a rodeo I check the pen for a steer that I drew
I gasp for air in disbelief for I have drawn the black steer # 92
The draw is the draw and there’s only one thing this cowboy can do
Back my horse in the box and knock a good start and bulldog ol 92!!!
Les Patterson will be my hazer he’s the best there is you see
The shoot opens and horses are runnin its Les Patterson, 92 and me

I slide down off the saddle put his horns in the pocket of my shirt
My feet blow out of the stirrups my boot heals dig deep in the dirt
With out missing a step he picks up speed no time to hesitate
Head first we hit like a freight train and crash into steel a gate
He scrapes me down the arena fence and heads toward the bucking shoot
Not looking for any more punishment I turn loose of the ornery ol brute
Now you’ve heard stories about bucking broncos that never could be road
And stories about them tough ol cowboys that never could be throwed
This is the story of a little black steer that no cowboy could subdue
Faster than a fox stronger than an ox that wasppy little steer ol # 92

Rusty Feather's has fast become one of Montana's premier cowboy poets. In less than two years he has gained international acclaim in the UK and abroad. You can find his CD's playing from  Canada to Arizona, Oregon to Texas and even New York! An Oregonian born and raised, Rusty spent his childhood hunting, trapping and fishing. He grew up on stories passed down by his father and grandfather about the cowboy's in Montana and Wyoming still riding the range and packing six guns to town. Stories that bestowed into his mind the ways of the cowboy and lead him to the life he lives today.

Rusty has worked for several ranches across the west, and still rides doing day work for ranches in Montana. He has developed a vast knowledge of the cowboy way of life. Taking in all the grit, wisdom and lore of a cowboy's past and present; gives Rusty the material and inspiration to bring to his audience a spectacular presentation of the fine
art that Cowboy Poetry has become today. Rusty Feather's poetry comes from the heart, inspired by his love of the west; experiences and his belief in     God, his poems, stories and songs paint an ever-enduring picture of the cowboy way of life. From the moment he walks on stage, he captivates his audience with a powerful voice and a hint of emotion. Audiences find themselves waiting for the next line unknowing if they will laugh or cry.
